Short Film Competition
Make a short horror film, or finish one you’ve already started, and we’ll play it on the big screen.
Drop off bySunday, October 25
ScreeningSunday, November 1
How it works
- Pick a horror subgenre and make a film 2 to 5 minutes long, including credits.
- Make it by yourself or grab some friends.
- Shoot it on whatever you have.
- For best results, shoot horizontal (not vertical) and send an MP4 in 1080p.
- We’ll convert it to DCP (the highest quality for our screens).
Themes
We’re not going to reinvent the wheel here. Blumhouse already does a fantastic job breaking horror down into subgenres. Pick any one of their 23 (slasher, supernatural, found footage, horror comedy, and more) and make your film around it.

How to submit
- Drop your film off on a USB drive at the box office by Sunday, October 25.
- We’re open weekends, so stop in during any showtime.
- Can’t make it in? Message us on Facebook and we’ll set up another time.
- Put your name, phone number, and film title on the drive.
- You’ll sign a quick form when you drop it off. Under 18? A parent or guardian signs too.
Rules
- Films have to be finished when you drop them off. No rough cuts or unfinished edits.
- Only use music and footage you have permission to use.
- By submitting, you give The Strand permission to screen your film and share clips online.
- No rating limits. If we get some mature films, we’ll split them into separate showings.
The screening
- Sunday, November 1
- Showtime announced once we know how many films we have.
- We screen every film we get.
- Trophies and audience voting on screening night.
- Entry is free. So is the screening, and the balcony will be open.
Just for fun
This is just for fun. We’re testing something out, and we want to do it with our community. Don’t worry if your story doesn’t make sense, the audio is rough, the lighting is weird, or you shot it on your phone. It all works. Do your best. Please participate. We want to be a community theater, and this is how we do it.
Want to make one but don’t have anyone to make it with? Message us on Facebook and we’ll help you find people.
And yes, The Strand is making one too. Our cast and the owner are in on it.
